UW Data Collaborative (UWDC)

The UW Data Collaborative (UWDC) offers researchers a secure infrastructure-including computing and staffing resources-that supports innovative, interdisciplinary, collaborative research involving sensitive, confidential, or proprietary data. The UWDC solves two challenges – securely protecting confidential or proprietary data AND provisioning access for secure data sharing and management.

Description

The UWDC, a program of the UW Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology (CSDE), enables secure, innovative research by supporting the responsible use and sharing of confidential and proprietary data. UWDC integrates two key components: a secure computing environment and a specialized support infrastructure.

At its core is dCollab, a server-based Secure Data Enclave offering researchers a virtual workspace akin to a traditional ‘cold room’. Endorsed by UW OIS and recognized by UW OSP for hosting Controlled Unclassified Information and NIH Controlled-Access Data, dCollab aligns with NIST 800-171 Revision 3 cybersecurity standards. It features encryption, access controls, network segmentation, and continuous monitoring. Data hosting and file transfers are managed by UWDC staff in accordance with data use agreements, whether issued by UWDC or by other data providers. In addition to its robust security infrastructure, dCollab provides users a virtual Windows Desktop environment equipped with a full suite of tools for secure data analysis.

The support infrastructure comprises staff with specialized expertise in reviewing, preparing, and managing data sharing agreements; security personnel overseeing all data ingress/egress; and technical staff maintaining and updating system integrity and performance.
