Description
The eScience Institute at the University of Washington serves as a hub for Data Science and AI across all fields. Its mission is to ensure that UW is a leader in advancing the techniques and applications of Data Science and AI and making them accessible to researchers at all three campuses.
The Institute operates several key programs designed to bridge the gap between advanced computational techniques and researchers across disciplines. Data Science Office Hours connect researchers with experts in Data Science and AI to help triage research challenges, focused on topics like Python, R, AI/ML, and high-performance computing. The Data Science and AI Accelerator program brings together data scientists and domain researchers for collaborative projects ranging from one week to six months, supporting work in AI and machine learning, scalable data management, statistical analysis, data visualization, and cloud computing. The UW Scientific Software Engineering Center (SSEC) works with researchers to integrate software industry best practices and deliver open source, sustainable software that can accelerate research across fields ranging from biodiversity and bioethics to education and natural disasters. Additionally, the Institute organizes specialized hackweeks and workshops that provide hands-on training in cutting-edge AI and data science methods.
The eScience Institute plays a central role in UW’s comprehensive approach to data science education, coordinating data science specializations across multiple departments and offering pathways from undergraduate options and minors, to a professional masters degree and graduate education.
