The University of Washington’s Department of Global Health (founded in 2007) unites Medicine, Public Health, and 14 other UW schools to advance interdisciplinary global health research and training. With 400+ faculty, 25+ programs, and major focus areas from infectious diseases to climate and mental health.

Description

The University of Washington’s Department of Global Health (DGH) was established in 2007 through a generous gift and endowment from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and complementary Washington State resources. UW DGH bridges the schools of Medicine and Public Health, with a mandate to harness the expertise and interdisciplinary power of all 16 UW schools and colleges. Currently, the department has more than 400 faculty representing 15 of 16 UW schools and colleges and 41 departments. It is the second largest department at the University in terms of funding for research and training programs, and includes more than 25 centers, programs, initiatives, and is affiliated with the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). The Department offers a wide selection of programs, including MPH and PhD degrees, Health Metrics & Evaluation Post-Bachelor Fellowships, and Graduate Certificate Programs in Global Health. A Global Health Minor is also open to students from across campus. Current and emerging focus areas include: health metrics and evaluation, infectious diseases, workforce development, health system strengthening and implementation science, global mental health, climate change, global trauma and violence, global medicines safety, women, children and adolescent health.
