Description
Funded by a grant from the National Eye Institute (NEI), the Vision Core supports NEI researchers with histology and microscopy. The Vision Core is not a cost center and gives priority to NEI researchers, but is open to NIH-funded researchers outside of the NEI when time and equipment is available.
Services include experiment and data analysis consultation, cryosectioning, and electron microscopy (JEOL 1230 transmission EM, Zeiss Sigma serial block-face scamnning EM). A number of specialty histology services (RNAscope, expansion microscopy, correlative microscopy, enzyme histochemistry) are available on a limited basis.
Instrumentation and training is available for sectioning (Leica VT1000S vibratome, Leica CM1850 cryostat), light microscopy (Nikon Eclipse E1000 widefield, Zeiss AxioCam inverted), and confocal microscopy (Leica SP8). The confocal room is approved for general BSL-2 and animal use, dependent on authorizations for individual researchers.
Other resources include a workstation for image processing, a large library of primary and secondary antibodies, and a sample library of human and non-human primate eye tissue for qualified researchers. Lab space with dissection microscopes and tools for sample preparation, as well as a cell culture room, are also available.
